The European Union (EU) observer mission has reported significant discrepancies in the election results from Mozambique, following the controversial general elections held on October 9. As unrest escalates in the country, the EU has highlighted evidence of irregularities during the counting process, including doctored results at polling stations and district levels. They have urged electoral bodies to ensure a transparent and credible tabulation process, emphasizing the need for traceability of results.
Mnangagwa’s Support for Frelimo
Amid these tensions, Zimbabwe’s President Emmerson Mnangagwa has prematurely celebrated the ruling Frelimo party’s victory, publicly congratulating its presidential candidate, Daniel Chapo.
Speaking at a Zanu PF Politburo meeting, Mnangagwa expressed solidarity with Frelimo, stating,
“Zanu PF stands ready to cement the long-existing revolutionary unity between our parties and countries.”
This endorsement could exacerbate tensions with the opposition Podemos party and its candidate, Venâncio Mondlane, who has vigorously contested the election outcome.
Rising Unrest and Opposition Protests
The situation in Mozambique has become increasingly volatile, with thousands participating in opposition protests led by Mondlane. He has accused security forces of being responsible for the recent killings of his lawyer, Elvino Dias, and another political official, Paulo Guambe. The security forces have denied any wrongdoing, but Mondlane claims these acts were politically motivated.
Protests have been met with a heavy-handed response from police, who used live rounds, tear gas, and armored vehicles to disperse demonstrators. The unrest has led to multiple injuries and arrests, with scenes of chaos reported as Mondlane and journalists sought safety amid the violence.
Conclusion
As the official election results are expected to be announced soon, the situation in Mozambique remains tense. The allegations of electoral fraud and violence against opposition figures have raised serious concerns about the integrity of the electoral process and the safety of political activists in the country.
