Smuggling Attempt Foiled by ZIMRA

In a recent operation, the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA), in collaboration with other law enforcement agencies, successfully thwarted an attempt to smuggle goods valued at over R150,000 into Zimbabwe.

The incident took place along the Beitbridge-Bulawayo road on Saturday, where a Hino Dutro truck towing a trailer filled with undeclared alcoholic beverages, energy drinks, and crisps was intercepted.

ZIMRA reported that the truck’s driver “was unable to provide the necessary importation documents” and was subsequently instructed to proceed to the border under police escort.

As the convoy made its way to the border, a Toyota Hilux vehicle “aggressively approached the convoy, causing a disturbance.” This led to the arrest of several individuals involved in the incident, including the truck driver, who attempted to flee. ZIMRA noted,

“The vehicle owner later arrived and apologized for the incident and was allowed to repair the damaged truck before being escorted to the border for further customs processing.”

The authorities seized a variety of smuggled goods, which included well-known brands such as Red Bull, Dragon, Hello, Detroi, Belgravia Gin, Brutal Fruit, and Corona Extra.

ZIMRA confirmed that the total estimated value of the seized goods exceeded R150,000.

In light of this incident, ZIMRA has urged traders to comply with customs regulations and utilize formal ports of entry to avoid penalties and fines. The revenue authority has also enhanced its surveillance measures, including the deployment of drones, to combat smuggling activities effectively.
