A shocking incident in Masvingo’s Chorupanga Village has left the community reeling after a 53-year-old man, Rameck Chidinhika, and his three daughters were detained for murdering his parents, Tizirai Chidinhika (77) and Miriam Polisiri (92). The family accused the elderly couple of practicing witchcraft, believing it brought misfortunes upon them.

“The incident occurred on October 11, 2024, at around 7 AM. The victims were brutally murdered by their own son and granddaughters,” said Zimbabwe Republic Police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi.

The accused daughters are Constancia Chidinhika (28), Vimbai Chidinhika (19), and a 15-year-old juvenile. They are currently in police custody, facing investigation for their involvement in the crime.

“We are probing the circumstances leading to the murders and urge anyone with information to come forward,” Commissioner Nyathi added.

This tragic event highlights the destructive consequences of unfounded witchcraft accusations, which have become a recurring issue in Zimbabwe. Recently, a young man from Midlands set his father’s house and car ablaze, also citing witchcraft allegations.

A Disturbing Trend

“Many families in Zimbabwe face similar allegations, and sometimes victims take matters into their own hands. We urge people not to resolve family disputes using violence,” Commissioner Nyathi emphasized.

The police are working to address the root causes of these beliefs and promote peaceful conflict resolution within communities.
