On Tuesday night, a devastating fire engulfed Mbare Musika, an informal market hub in Harare, leading to significant destruction and chaos. While many individuals were focused on rescuing victims and salvaging property, a group of criminals took advantage of the situation to engage in looting and theft.

Police Response

The Zimbabwe Republic Police were called in to manage the situation as the crowd swelled and thieves rampaged under the cover of darkness. Their intervention was crucial in dispersing the looters who were exploiting the chaos caused by the fire.

Impact of the Fire

According to Boniface Maburutse, the Zanu PF councillor for Ward 4 in Mbare, approximately 2000 people were affected by the fire. The incident not only destroyed numerous properties but also disrupted the livelihoods of many who relied on the market for their income.

This tragic event highlights the challenges faced during emergencies, where the actions of a few can complicate rescue efforts and exacerbate the suffering of those affected.
