Tragedy struck in Chipazi village, Dotito, during a traditional cleansing ceremony when renowned herbalist Emily Chiduwa, 67, died after consuming a concoction prepared by 23-year-old sangoma Dorica Masunungure.
“I can confirm that Emily Chiduwa died after consuming a concoction made from fermented local tobacco,” said Provincial police spokesperson, Sergeant Major Samuel Chikasha.
Chiduwa sought Masunungure’s services to enhance her healing powers. Masunungure prepared the concoction by boiling the tobacco in a clay pot and administered it to Chiduwa.
“After consuming the concoction, Chiduwa started vomiting and soiling herself… her condition deteriorated, and she was rushed to Mt Darwin Hospital, where she died,” Sergeant Major Chikasha added.
Masunungure faces culpable homicide charges.
