A 16-year-old Form 3 student in Chinhoyi has been sentenced for assaulting a younger student.

The incident occurred on February 15, 2024, following a misunderstanding between the accused and a Form 2 student. The accused claimed that the younger student had hired others to attack him, leading to a retaliatory assault where he slapped the complainant five times on the face.

Details of the Assault

Later that day, the accused, along with others, attacked the victim using a chain and hosepipe, striking him multiple times. A passerby intervened during the attack, prompting the assailants to flee the scene. The victim subsequently reported the incident to the police, which resulted in the arrest of the accused.

Court Proceedings and Sentencing

The Chinhoyi Magistrates’ Court sentenced the teen to a wholly suspended four-month prison term. This means that the sentence will not be enforced unless the accused commits another offense during a specified period. Following the sentencing, the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe emphasized the importance of resolving conflicts peacefully and seeking mediation to prevent violence.
