On Friday, two fishermen tragically drowned when their dinghy capsized in Lake Kariba.
Their bodies were recovered by a collaborative effort involving the police sub-aqua unit and local community members near Antelope Islands. The bodies were subsequently taken to Kariba Hospital for postmortem examinations.
Rescue Efforts
Three other fishermen who were aboard the same dinghy were rescued by participants of the ongoing Kariba International Tiger Fish Tournament 2024. This highlights the community’s quick response and the importance of safety measures during recreational activities on the lake.
Community Response
The Kariba community expressed deep sorrow over the incident. Marshal Mushore, a spokesperson for the Kariba Residents Trust (KART), conveyed condolences to the families affected and emphasized the need for enhanced safety precautions in light of the dangers associated with fishing and boating on Lake Kariba.
Historical Context
Lake Kariba has a history of boating accidents, underscoring the risks involved in such activities. For instance, a similar incident occurred last October when three individuals lost their lives after a motorized boat capsized near Tsetse Island. This ongoing concern calls for increased awareness and safety measures among those who engage in fishing and recreational boating on the lake.
