A false alarm spread like wildfire on social media, claiming the Zimbabwe Examinations Council (ZIMSEC) building had been ravaged by fire, leading to the cancellation of the October/November 2024 Ordinary and Advanced Level examinations.
The misleading post, generated by artificial intelligence, featured an image of the ZIMSEC building engulfed in flames, sparking panic among students.
“Zimsec building burnt down this morning, burning all the Nov examination papers, this has caused the cancellation of the Nov 2024 exams. The investigations are still in process trying to figure out what could have caused the fire,” read the Facebook post by Washington Mangezi.
However, ZIMSEC’s public relations team quickly dispelled the rumor with a witty response.
“It seems some Candidates are feeling the heat. It Is NOT our building burning. 14 October is just around the corner….study to show yourself approved!” ZIMSEC posted on their official Facebook account.
The examinations council reassured students that the exams are proceeding as scheduled, urging them to focus on preparation.
