Tragic Incident in Thembisa

South African Correspondent

A heartbreaking incident occurred in Thembisa, South Africa, where a grandmother, known as gogo, is mourning the loss of her two-year-old granddaughter, Siphokazi “Phopho” Mtshweni.

The tragedy unfolded after the family consumed a meal that included canned fish purchased from a local spaza shop on October 1.

Health Concerns and Community Outrage

Following the meal, both the grandmother’s partner was hospitalized, and little Phopho tragically died. Health inspectors confirmed that the canned fish was expired, leading to outrage among residents who are now calling for the closure of the shop. Gogo Mtshweni is advocating for a thorough police investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Family’s Grief and Call for Justice

The family is devastated by the loss. Aunt Phindile Mtshweni expressed the family’s desire for justice, stating,

“We want Phopho to rest in peace, and that can only happen if justice is served.” Phopho’s father, Oupa Phafudi, described her as a “bubbly person loved by everyone,” while her mother, Happy Mtshweni, fondly remembered her playful nature.

The death certificate confirmed that poisoning was the cause of death, prompting the Gauteng police to open an inquest into the incident. The spaza shop manager has stated that they are assisting with the funeral costs, but the community remains on edge, demanding accountability and answers regarding the tragic loss of young Phopho.
