In a landmark ruling, the Pretoria High Court has sentenced Nkosinathi Emmanuel Phakathi, a 40-year-old serial rapist, to 42 life sentences along with an additional 791 years and six months in prison. This decision was met with relief from victims and their families, who have long awaited justice.
Details of the Crimes
Phakathi was convicted on November 8, 2022, for a series of heinous crimes committed in and around Ekurhuleni from June 2012 until his arrest in March 2021. His offenses included multiple counts of rape, assault, and theft, with the youngest victim being just nine years old. Initially facing over 200 charges, he ultimately pleaded guilty to 148.
Method of Operation
Phakathi’s modus operandi involved deceiving his victims by posing as a service worker, which allowed him to gain their trust before committing his crimes. His connection to the offenses was established through DNA evidence, which played a crucial role in the investigation.
Reactions to the Sentencing
Lumka Mahanjana, spokeswoman for the North Gauteng NPA, hailed the sentence as one of the most significant ever handed down, emphasizing that it sends a strong message against such offenses. Investigating officer Warrant Officer Tlala John Mokoena expressed satisfaction with the outcome, crediting his team for their hard work in bringing Phakathi to justice.
Victims and their families shared their mixed emotions. One family member stated, “We are relieved even though the pain remains,” while another victim expressed hope for healing, saying, “We thought we had been let down, but we’re happy to smile today.”
Conclusion
This case highlights the importance of justice for victims of sexual violence and serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts to combat such crimes in society. The severe sentencing reflects a commitment to holding offenders accountable and supporting victims in their journey toward healing.
