A tragic road accident on Wednesday afternoon claimed the lives of eight individuals and left 11 others injured when a Nissan Caravan veered off the Hwedza-Goto Road and overturned multiple times before finally landing back on its wheels.
The incident occurred near Maruta Primary School, approximately 5 kilometers from Hwedza Centre.
The vehicle was carrying 19 passengers, all of whom were reportedly returning from a funeral in Ruzane Village, Hwedza, where they had gathered to bury a relative.
In a heartbreaking turn of events, seven people died at the scene, while the eighth victim succumbed to their injuries after being admitted to a hospital in Harare.
National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the details of the incident, stating,
“The majority of the deceased are members of the same family.”
This revelation adds a layer of tragedy to an already devastating situation, as families grapple with the loss of loved ones during a time of mourning.
The injured passengers were quickly transported to Mt St Mary’s Hospital for treatment, with some requiring further care and being transferred to Sally Mugabe and Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals. Meanwhile, the bodies of the deceased were taken to Mt St Mary’s Hospital mortuary for postmortem examinations.
This accident highlights ongoing concerns about road safety in the region, particularly regarding the condition of vehicles and adherence to safety regulations. As investigations continue, the community mourns the loss of lives and reflects on the importance of road safety measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.
