Great news for the people of Binga District in Matabeleland North Province! Thirty-seven housing units constructed by the government for villagers displaced by floods in 2019 are finally ready for handover. These modern, two-bedroomed brick and cement houses are a significant upgrade from the traditional pole and dagga houses, offering a safer living environment on higher ground.
“The longer the project takes, the more frustrated those who need these homes become,” said Dr. Jorum Gumbo, Special Advisor to the President on Monitoring Implementation of Government Programmes and Projects.
He emphasized the importance of timely project completion, urging a culture of efficiency aligned with the government’s commitment.
The handover is scheduled for next week, pending completion of essential amenities like toilets. Engineers are putting the final touches on the ablution facilities. Logistical challenges, including incorrect materials and a shortage of skilled labor, caused delays. Dr. Gumbo recommended prioritizing vocational training for locals to address skill gaps.
This development is part of the government’s broader strategy to mitigate flooding risks and provide robust housing solutions, particularly in Binga. The rural housing delivery program aims to rectify historical issues with sub-standard construction materials.
Key Benefits:
- Improved Living Conditions: Modern houses replace traditional pole and dagga structures
- Reduced Flood Risk: Houses built on higher ground
- Increased Safety: Brick and cement construction
- Economic Empowerment: Vocational training for locals
- Government Support: Commitment to developing marginalized areas.
The completion of these houses brings hope for a more secure future to Binga flood victims, demonstrating the government’s commitment to leaving no one and no place behind in development.
