Gun possession is allowed in Zimbabwe, with registration having been centralised in the late 1970s.
Types of firearms permitted to be registered by private individuals in the country are rifles and all non full automatic rifles.
The most common type of guns are handguns, revolvers, shotgun, rifles, assault rifles, machine guns.
Revolvers contain a cylinder wherein multiple chambers hold cartridges separately and rotate with each cock of the gun. It has four types: Single action, Double action, Double action only. These are common among handgun hunters.
Handguns are a perfect weapon for concealed carry users because it is light, carries a strong punch and is very accurate.
Also, rifles require both hands and are fired from the shoulder. The types are air rifles, AR-15, lever action rifles, semi automatic rifles etc.
Shotguns can fire off multiple projectiles called ‘shot’. The shot explodes from the gun and spreads out as it leaves.
There are also machine guns. These are fully automatic weapons, meaning that when the trigger mechanism is being utilised, the firearms will repeatedly fire until you release the trigger.
The most common type of assault rifle is the AK47.
The AK-47, officially known as the Avtomat Kalashnikova, also known as the Kalashnikov or just AK, is a gas-operated assault rifle that is chambered for the 7.62×39mm cartridge. Developed in the Soviet Union by Russian small-arms designer Mikhail Kalashnikov. It is the originating firearm of the Kalashnikov (or “AK”) family of rifles. After more than seven decades, the AK-47 model and its variants remain the most popular and widely used rifles in the world.
It has become the most reliable assault riffle by robbers as well as insurgents. Many armies across the globe use the AK-47.
Now, the gun used by Joseph Nemaisa to shoot the ‘intruders’ is a Stribog firearm.
The Stribog is a semi-automatic carbine, a relatively new weapon developed by Slovakian company Grand Power S.R.O. The Stribog is currently available in different versions; SP9 as a gun, SR9 as a carbine and RSR9 as a rifle.
Stribog was developed primarily as a select-fire weapon for international military and police markets, its semi-auto version is no slouch when it comes to ergonomics and shootability.
This has different types.
Assuming he used a Stribog Grand Power personal defense weapon, the gun is an 8 inch barrel which makes for great velocity with 9mm loads. In terms of action, its a dynamic blowback mass bolt.
It is a sub-gun-like pistol which has a magazine capacity of 20+. Its rotating barrel locking system is said to ensure smooth shooting.
In a video, Joseph Nemaisa the top former police detective and law student said he was not at home when he received a call from his son notifying him of suspicious movements from outside which indicated intruders.
He states he rushed to his car and drove as fast as he could, reaching his home in 12 to 13 minutes.
“I parked my vehicle at the back of the property there. I was armed with a Stribog firearm.”
Nemaisa claims he ran through a vacant stand and jumped onto his yard through the wall.
This he says, is the time he saw the intruders and ran to the garden for safety.
He did not specify when he went into the house from the garden but says one of the intruders,
“Peeped through the passage. As soon as he showed up, I shot him in the chest and he went down.”
Following the shot at one of the intruders, Nemaisa says two others followed, with one asking Nemaisa’s son to pick the gun from their deceased colleague and give it back to him.
He claims he shot both of them dead as he was shooting from a 90 degree angle.
All this shootout has raised eyebrows from the public, with many questions boggling the mind.
In the event that Memaisa received a call from his son, the man could have called the police to inform them of what was taking place at his home, but he did not.
This has raised a question of whether he knew the intruders or not.
He then drove an approximate 10 kilometres in 12 to 13 minutes (according to the public), arrived at his home fully armed with a Stribog.
Does he perhaps carry the gun with him everywhere, or perhaps he had expected the ‘robbers’?
The public mostly on social media disputes this whole story, labelling it a “movie”.
Nemaisa was trained well in his time of becoming a renowned detective. However, the question of his capability to kill three armed robbers on his own is questionable.
The public quickly took to say that all this “smells fishy.”
One Revesayi Mutede said:
“Single handedly aiming at 5 armed robbers through a window in the dark? He is a top sniper then. Where were the neighbours in all this?”
While all these questions and more spiralled, another surfaced, associating the former detective with the robbery at ZB of which US$2.7 million was stolen.
Temba Mliswa has refused to believe the allegations against Nemaisa saying:
“…those in the know will tell you that he has that capacity. The guy is intelligent and was good at this job. He fought criminals and was only removed from the Police by his enemies there. They want to tarnish his name.”
Be that as it may, the public is still in awe as the man showed no signs of being shaken or moved by the situation as his family was held hostage. Any man would be shacking in their boots if he were to learn that his child was held hostage with five barrels of guns pointing at him.
The main question of the matter is where he got the Stribog and whether it is allowed to private citizens in the country.
Noting that robbers often use AK47s during shootouts, it is impossible that 5 men could be overpowered by one man with a gun that’s heavier than theirs though it carries more capacity.
More clarity on what really happened in the house of Nemaisa still stands to be known, hopefully soon.
