Civil servants in Zimbabwe have rejected the government’s proposed salary adjustment offer, presented during the National Joint Negotiating Council (NJNC) meeting on September 20.
The Zimbabwe Confederation of Public Sector Trade Unions (ZCPSTU) deemed the offer insufficient, prompting a deadlock in negotiations.
“The Government had brought an offer which we did not accept… In today’s meeting, the Government maintained its initial offer,” stated ZCPSTU ¹. They urged the government to improve the proposal and decided to escalate the matter to higher authorities for further engagement.
The proposed offer’s details remain undisclosed, including the amount and currency (Zimbabwean dollars or US dollars). Currently, civil servants earn approximately US$300 before deductions and ZiG$2,000.
The Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ) criticized ZCPSTU for alleged bad-faith negotiations, stating: “NJNC Salary negotiations are a bedroom affair between the government and… ruling elites. They can spend months talking without consulting those they pretend to represent”.
Key Points:
- Rejected Offer: ZCPSTU declined the government’s proposal due to insufficiency.
- Current Salary: Civil servants earn around US$300 and ZiG$2,000.
- ARTUZ Criticism: Accused ZCPSTU of negotiating in bad faith.
- Next Steps: ZCPSTU will escalate the matter to higher authorities.
