President Emmerson Mnangagwa of Zimbabwe will not be attending this year’s United Nations General Assembly in New York due to a packed schedule in the final quarter of 2024.
This announcement was made by Deputy Chief Secretary for Presidential Communications, George Charamba, who stated,
“In light of a dense programme in the last quarter of 2024, His Excellency the President, Dr E.D. Mnangagwa, will not attend this year’s United Nations General Assembly in New York, USA”.
Instead, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Fredrick Shava, who is already in New York, will deliver President Mnangagwa’s statement on his behalf at the Assembly. The annual UNGA session is a significant event that brings together world leaders to discuss pressing global issues, including international peace, security, climate change, and sustainable development goals.
It’s worth noting that President Mnangagwa has been busy with various engagements, including a recent roundtable on Zimbabwe’s debt arrears clearance, where he reiterated the government’s commitment to resolving its long overdue debt arrears and reengaging with world development partners and creditors.
