Mkhululi Ncube, a 29-year-old security guard from Bulawayo, has been sentenced to 24 months in prison for embezzling $3,300 from his employer and defrauding tenants at a flea market.
Ncube’s scheme involved collecting rent from tenants at Fife Mall between September 1-11, but instead of handing it over to his employer, he kept it for himself and blew it all on betting.
When confronted by his employer, Nkosiyabo Sibanda, Ncube couldn’t provide a satisfactory explanation for the missing funds. In court, Ncube claimed he took the money hoping to double it through betting and then return it, but unfortunately, he lost everything.
The Court’s Verdict
Ncube appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Mrs. Beverly Madzikatire, with Mrs. Tsungai Charmaine Mutapi-Saunyama presenting the case for the State. Ncube pleaded guilty to the charges and was subsequently sentenced to 24 months in prison.
This case highlights the importance of accountability and responsible financial management. Ncube’s actions not only harmed his employer but also damaged the trust between security guards and those they serve.
