Police in Zimbabwe are cracking down on unregistered vehicles, and those found without registration plates will be impounded immediately.
This is according to Police Spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi who stressed that some of these vehicles are being used as getaway cars by armed robbers, posing a significant risk to public safety.
“The Vehicle Registration and Licensing Act, Chapter 13:14 clearly specifies that an acquired vehicle should have a change of ownership effected within two weeks and licensed thereof,” Commissioner Nyathi emphasized.
He also noted that unlicensed and uninsured vehicles put innocent lives at risk, as they cannot be compensated in case of accidents.
Reasons for Impoundment:
- Getaway Cars: Unregistered vehicles are being used by armed robbers to evade law enforcement.
- Risk to Lives and Property: Unlicensed and uninsured vehicles put innocent people’s lives at risk.
- Disregard for Road Rules: Pirate taxis and mushikashika operators flout traffic regulations with impunity.
Zim GBC News would like to highlight to the ZRP that chief culprits are drivers of Mshikashika (Honda Fit and Wish cars) as well as Kombi drivers, especially those who have turned undesignated areas as passenger pick up points.
In Bulawayo, Fife Street and 8th Avenue, Fort Street and 8th Avenue, Fort Street and 11th Avenue, George Silundika Street and 8th Avenue, Joshua Mqabuko Nyongolo Nkomo Street and 3rd Avenue are amongst the areas that such vehicles rank and are found.
The ZRP must make serious efforts to eradicate such brazen disrespect of the law.
Commissioner Nyathi stressed that vehicles without registration plates should not be driven on public roads until properly licensed and insured.
The police operation aims to restore order on Zimbabwe’s roads and ensure public safety.
