Business Reporter

A South Africa-bound coal truck overturned on the Bulawayo-Plumtree Highway, narrowly escaping disaster, after the driver reportedly dozed off at the wheel.

The accident, which occurred at the 67km peg near Bulawayo, caused chaos on the highway, blocking the road and scattering coal debris everywhere.

“The truck veered off the road before flipping onto its side, leaving the highway littered with debris,” eyewitnesses described.

Miraculously, the unnamed driver was found alive, suffering only minor injuries, and was rushed to a nearby hospital in Bulawayo for treatment.

The incident sparked heated reactions on social media, with many calling for reforms in transportation.

“This is why our roads are in such bad condition,” Tami commented. “Why transport coal to South Africa from Hwange via road? Our authorities are useless.”

Others echoed similar sentiments, advocating for the revival of the railway line to alleviate pressure on roads.

“Please help us convey information to the government to revive the railway line so that most cargo can go through the rail,” Kue pleaded. “Our roads are overwhelmed with trucks.”

Pana added, “How can coal be transported by road? Let’s fix our rail systems.”

Nyamasvisva chimed in, “All this bulk needs a rail network, that’s why we have challenges with roads rehabilitation every now and then.”

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of road safety and the need for alternative transportation solutions.
