Residents of Entembeni Old People’s Home, a retirement home located in Bulawayo’s Luveve suburb were showered with early Christmas presents.
The donations were organised by the Parliament of Zimbabwe through a golf tournament that raised over ZWL$ 1 000 000.00
The handover ceremony was graced by the Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Judith Ncube, Deputy Speaker of the Senate Hon. General Retired M.R. Nyambu with sponsors such as Holiday Inn, Rainbow Tourism Group, Premier Service Medical Aid Society in attendance.
In a statement, Nyambu thanked the sponsors for their continued support towards the needy.
“As Parliament, we’re mandated to take care of the elderly.
“The handover ceremony of the donation from the Parliament of Zimbabwe’s 4th Annual Golf Tournament was held in Harare in October.”
Nyambu further stated that the 4th Annual Golf Tournament is a yearly event whose intentions are to give back to society.
Their main objective is to raise funds towards a “worthy and needy cause.”
Recognising the donations given to the home, Nyambu noted:
“The 4th Charity Golf Annual Tournament brought ZWL$ 1 174 102 and US$1932, 3KV solar system and installation, 2 by 10kg washing machines, 2 by 50 inch LG smart television, 50 bedsheets and pillowcases, 1 desktop and medium printer, 340kg of sugar to mention a few.”
Noting that the elderly are more vulnerable to Covid-19, the donation also included face masks and sanitisers.
The administrator at Entembeni Old People’s Home expressed her gratitude towards the donations.
“We had challenges with washing the elders’ clothes, keeping documents and records of the elders but now we can store them in the computer as documents.”
The home was established in 1967 by a group of men who formed a trust and bought land from Bulawayo City Council.
They discovered that most people who were destitute were mainly from Malawi, Zambia, Mozambique and Angola who had come to Zimbabwe in the 1940s to look for work.
Currently, the eldest member Musamba Njovu from Angola is 104 years old. He claims to have come to Zimbabwe in 1948 and his father left him in the country when he was 14.
He worked in Victoria Falls and kept travelling until he reached Bulawayo. He believes his family members in Angola have passed on.
The 4th Annual Charity Golf Tournament has been playing a crucial role towards the needy.
Last year’s event donated to Kapota School of the Blind in Masvingo.
Njovu and his colleagues have welcomed the festive season with warm smiles as the donations will better their living conditions at the old people’s home.
The home survives on donations hence any assistance received is of great value.
