The Zimbabwean government has announced the disbursement of ZWG 70 million to political parties under the Political Parties Finance Act.
The ruling party, ZANU PF, will receive the lion’s share of ZWG 47.9 million, while the opposition CCC will receive ZWG 22.1 million.
The distribution of funds is based on each party’s performance in the most recent election, with government funding calculated according to the percentage of votes received. To qualify for this financial support, parties must secure at least 5% of the total votes cast in the election.
Sengezo Tshabangu, the leader of the opposition in Parliament and CCC’s self-declared interim Secretary-General, is expected to receive the party’s share of funds. This is because he is the only opposition politician whose authority to nominate or recall representatives is recognized by the State.
Minister of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Ziyambi Ziyambi announced the disbursement of funds through General Notice 1377 of 2024. The notice states that ZANU PF will receive ZWG 47,883,500, representing 68.4049% of the votes cast, while CCC will receive ZWG 22,116,500, representing 31.5950% of the total votes cast.
This funding is a significant boost to both parties, enabling them to strengthen their political activities and outreach programs. However, the opposition CCC has raised concerns about the fairness of the funding distribution, citing the need for a more equitable allocation of resources.
The government’s decision to provide funding to political parties is seen as a positive step towards promoting democracy and political pluralism in Zimbabwe.
Nevertheless, the funding distribution has sparked debate about the need for greater transparency and accountability in the allocation of resources.
