A recent viral video showcasing street children begging in Harare’s Central Business District (CBD) prompted authorities to take action, resulting in the apprehension of 22 children and their guardians.
The operation, conducted by the police and the Department of Social Welfare, aims to protect vulnerable individuals and restore order in the city.
“We will continue this crackdown until the city is free from street children and beggars,” said National Police Spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi.
The detained individuals were found in areas such as Rezende Street and Town House, where they were soliciting food and money.
Nyathi warned guardians against exploiting children and disabled individuals for begging, stating that such actions could lead to arrest for violating laws protecting minors.
The crackdown comes amid reports of street children engaging in theft, targeting women and schoolchildren for valuables like wigs, jewelry, and cell phones.
Africa Unity Square and Harare Gardens have been significantly affected by the presence of street children, with older children colluding with vendors to steal items and younger ones resorting to aggressive begging.
The authorities’ efforts aim to address the issue and ensure the safety and well-being of vulnerable individuals in Harare.
