A shocking incident has occurred at Usher Girls High School in Figtree, where two Form Three pupils held a “mock wedding ceremony” in their classroom, exchanging vows and receiving a bride price of US$180.
It has not been established what was the motive behind this “wedding”, but sources claimed that lesbianism is rife at this Salvation Army Church run institution.
“There is more to this so called wedding that has not been established. The girls from this school act funny, they dress like boys, walk like boys and behave like boys.” Claimed a source from the neighbourhood.
Since the school is situated on a farm, we frequently see them loitering in hidden spaces, asazi bayabe besenzani.” Another added.
A teacher from the school who cannot be named said the whole incident seem innocent on the surface as the students said it was a mock wedding, but its actually deeper.
The teacher concured with the sources on the weird behavior of some girls at the school.
“Yes, there is a click of girls who have adopted boyish tendencies. Some of them do not even hide this wayward character.”
The teacher said the said mock wedding was beyond imagination. It was real, with a decorated venue, eats and all that befit a real wedding.
“It was a beautiful venue, decorated with balloons,” a teacher revealed.
“But the headmistress was shocked to find the wedding in progress and took swift action.”
The headmistress summoned the parents of the two girls and issued transfer letters to the pupils involved.
The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education has launched a thorough investigation, condemning activities that disrupt academic focus or violate school policies.
“We do not condone such activities,” said spokesperson Taungana Ndoro. “A thorough investigation is underway, led by a committee of experienced educators and administrators.”
The incident has raised questions about the motivations behind the girls’ actions and the implications for the school community. While some may view it as a harmless prank, others see it as a disruption to the academic environment and a violation of school policies and the country’s homosexual laws.
In 2006 Zimbabwe passed laws that criminalises any actions perceived to be homosexual. In Zimbabwe it is an offence for two people of the same sex to hold hands, hug and or kiss. The sections of the legislature involving gays and lesbians are part of an overhaul that were passed by parliament.
In 2013, the Constitution of Zimbabwe was amended to define marriage as between a man and a woman. In 2019, the government further approved and aligned marriage law. The new law banned both child marriages and same sex marriages in line with the Constitution.
