The Zimbabwean government, through the Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC), is working to rehabilitate the National Sports Stadium to meet CAF standards by 2024.
“We are happy to report that the first batch of bucket seats is now in Beira, ready for transporting to Zimbabwe,” said SRC board chairman Gerald Mlotshwa.
“We are working to ascertain the timeframes for transportation to give accurate information.”
Mlotshwa expressed confidence in completing the work by December 2023, despite acknowledging significant work is still required on the pitch.
Director-general Elta Nengomasha added,
“While we await the full complement of bucket seats, work has been progressing in other areas. We are securing the stadium with a new perimeter fence, expected to be complete by the end of August.”
Nengomasha also noted progress in upgrading the water reticulation system, delivering turnstiles and CCTV equipment, and acquiring generators and new floodlights meeting CAF standards.
However, due to the lack of a CAF-certified stadium, the national team will play home matches in other countries, hosting Cameroon, Kenya, and Namibia in Uganda in the coming months.
