Experts warn that Zanu PF’s push for professionals and government employees to undergo re-orientation at the Herbert Chitepo School of Ideology is a step towards creating a one-party State.
“This is not a national program, but a political party abusing State institutions to indoctrinate and impose its ideology on the people. It will fail dismally,” said Promise Mkwananzi, spokesperson for the Citizens Coalition for Change.
Rashweat Mukundu, a political analyst, added, “It is a total disregard of constitutional provisions that seeks to separate the party from the State and depoliticise the civil service… What we are seeing from Zanu PF is a return to the 1980s project, which is a project of a one-party State.”
Ruben Mbofana, another political analyst, emphasized, “When someone is elected to be an office bearer, a public servant, you are supposed to be apolitical. You are now supposed to serve the nation rather than your party… It is wrong to force someone elected on an opposition ticket to attend an ideological school and indoctrination school of another political party.”
Munyaradzi Machacha, Zanu PF’s national political commissar, defended the program, saying it is a national initiative, not a Zanu PF project. However, critics argue that the program’s true intention is to consolidate power and impose Zanu PF’s ideology on the nation.
