The Chinese government has donated 2,000 tons of rice to Zimbabwe to help alleviate the effects of the El Nino-induced drought that led to widespread crop failure.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa praised the Chinese government for its support during difficult times.

“We are grateful for this donation from our friends from the People’s Republic of China, particularly President Xi Jinping, who has always been there for Zimbabwe,” Mnangagwa said. “

He has donated food to us many times, and we appreciate his support. We assure Zimbabweans that no one will die of hunger, as our friends like China will always come to our aid.”

Chinese Ambassador Zhou Ding highlighted the strong relations between China and Zimbabwe, saying,

“As all-weather friends, when Zimbabwe faces difficulties, China provides help. We promised last year to provide emergency food assistance, and this is the second batch. A third batch will arrive soon.”

Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare Minister July Moyo expressed gratitude for the donation, noting that 85% of the population relies on maize meal or traditional grains. “The rice will be distributed to the less privileged, including children’s homes,” he said.

The donation is a testament to the strong friendship between China and Zimbabwe, with China providing support during times of need.
