Police in Banket have launched an investigation into the death of 40-year-old George Mpofu, who was found hanging from a tree with his feet touching the ground, raising doubts about the official suicide ruling.
“We are still waiting for the post-mortem results to determine the cause of death,” said Constable Charles Murefu.
“The circumstances surrounding Mpofu’s death are suspicious, and we need to get to the bottom of it.”
According to a police report, Mpofu had a scuffle with his wife Nyadzisai Zungunde earlier that day, which ended with them agreeing to seek counseling. However, Mpofu reportedly changed his mind and threatened to commit suicide.
“I thought he was just saying that out of anger, but I never thought he would actually do it,” Zungunde said in a statement.
“I’m still in shock and can’t believe he’s gone.”
The police report notes that Mpofu’s body was found semi-naked with a blood-stained t-shirt nearby, and a wooden stick with blood on it was recovered from the scene.
“The fact that his legs were touching the ground and there was a stick nearby suggests that something else might have happened,” said Murefu. “We need to investigate further to determine the truth.”
The police are still waiting for the post-mortem results from Banket Hospital to shed more light on the circumstances surrounding Mpofu’s death.
