An 18-year-old woman from Harare, Junior Mafura, has been arrested and charged with attempted murder after allegedly trying to drown her one-year-old baby in a dam.
Mafura appeared before Harare magistrate Estere Chivase on Friday and was remanded in custody until August 16, pending the finalization of investigations.
According to prosecutor Mercy Masamvi, the incident occurred on August 9 when an informant, Simbarashe Magada (33), witnessed Mafura walking suspiciously away from the dam. Magada’s curiosity led him to investigate further, and he discovered a minor floating in the water, struggling to stay afloat.
Without hesitation, Magada jumped into the water and rescued the baby, who was on the verge of drowning. He then chased after Mafura, who was attempting to flee the scene, and caught her at Mutamba Shops in Retreat, Waterfalls.
Magada immediately took Mafura to the nearest police station, where he filed a report and handed her over to the authorities.
The motivations behind Mafura’s actions are still unclear, and the case has left the community in shock. The incident highlights the need for support systems and resources for young mothers, as well as the importance of community vigilance in preventing such tragic events.
Mafura’s case will continue on August 16, and she faces severe charges if found guilty. The baby’s condition is currently stable, and the child is receiving necessary care and attention.
