Five teams from the African continent have booked their places in the forthcoming FIFA World Cup to be hosted by Qatar later this year.
Algeria failed to qualify after they lost 2-1 to Cameroon in two legged fixture. Algerian coach Djamel Belmadi resigned after this defeat to the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon.
Former Egyptian coach Carlos Queiroz was shown the exit door after The Pharaohs failed to qualify for Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup after losing to Senegal by 3-1 in penalty shoot-out after a back to back fixtures that ended in a 1-1 stalemate.
Queiroz sent his goodbye messages to the players, staff and the Egypt Federation after the match on his Twitter handle.
Queiroz has served as manager of his native Portugal national team on two occasions, the United Arab Emirates, South Africa, Iran and Colombia.
He led South Africa (2002), Portugal (2010) and Iran (2014 and 2018) to the FIFA World Cup.
At club level, he has also managed Sporting CP.
Queiroz has won several awards as a coach in junior levels, and has been successful senior and club levels, mainly as Alex Ferguson’s assistant manager.
Queiroz is the longest-serving manager in the history of the Iran national team, serving for almost eight years between 2011 and 2019. He is the only manager in the country’s history to lead the national team to two consecutive World Cups.
This year Sadio Mane’s side Senegal has overcame Egypt on two crucial occasions. On the 6th of February Senegal beat Mohammed Salah captained side Egypt in the AFCON final in penalties to lift the Africa Cup of Nations, a month later the two sides met in the World Cup play offs and again Mo Salah’s side lost.
Ghana made it to Qatar after beating fellow West African rivals Nigeria in the play offs, the two legged fixture ended 1-1, Ghana was favoured by the away goals rule.
Other African countries that have qualifed for Qatar are Cameroon, Morocco and Tunisia.
