A 22-year-old woman from Nkulumane has died following a brutal assault allegedly perpetrated by her husband, highlighting the persistent problem of domestic violence in the country.
According to Inspector Nomalanga Msebele, Press and Public Relations Officer for the Zimbabwe Republic Police, the incident occurred on April 4, 2026, around 1500hrs.
The suspect, identified as 36-year-old Francis Lunga, reportedly returned from a work-related trip to South Africa and found a message on his wife’s phone from an unsaved number.
In an altercation over the message, Lunga allegedly attacked Sithandwenkosi Kunetha with a spanner and an unknown object, causing severe injuries. She was rushed to the hospital but succumbed to her injuries on April 6, 2026, at approximately 21:00 PM.
“This is a tragedy that underscores the devastating effects of domestic violence. These are not isolated incidents.
Last week, we reported another case in Lovingdale where a father fatally assaulted his wife over a phone number. Violence of this nature is unacceptable,” Inspector Msebele said.
Inspector Msebele urged the community to resolve conflicts through dialogue and to seek help from family elders, church leaders, resident associations, or police Community Relations and Liaison Officers.
“If you are having challenges in your relationship, involve the elders or the authorities. Do not let tempers lead to murder,” she emphasized.
The police have reiterated that domestic disputes should never escalate to physical violence and called on communities to campaign actively against domestic violence.
