‎The Zimbabwe Republic Police have arrested a 51-year-old man from Mpopoma, Caleb Moyo, in connection with suspected ATM fraud targeting unsuspecting bank clients.

‎Confirming the arrest, Inspector Nomalanga Msebele, Press and Public Relations Officer, said the suspect allegedly operated by posing as a Good Samaritan at ATM points before stealing bank cards.

‎The arrest follows an incident at an EcoBank ATM where a 53-year-old woman from Old Luveve experienced difficulties while attempting to withdraw money. The suspect reportedly approached her under the pretext of offering assistance.

‎“While pretending to help, the suspect allegedly swapped the complainant’s bank card with another card belonging to an unknown person,” said Inspector Msebele.

‎The woman quickly became suspicious and raised alarm, prompting members of the public to pursue the suspect as he attempted to flee. He was apprehended with the assistance of security personnel and handed over to the police.

‎Upon arrest, the suspect was found in possession of 21 ATM cards, leading investigators to believe he may have targeted multiple victims using the same method.

‎Police investigations revealed that the suspect’s modus operandi involved stealing bank cards and later returning to withdraw cash after victims had left the scene, often unaware that their cards had been swapped.

‎Inspector Msebele commended members of the public for their swift action, which led to the suspect’s arrest, and noted that the complainant was fortunate to detect the fraud before any money was withdrawn.

‎She urged members of the public to remain vigilant when using ATMs and to avoid accepting help from strangers.

‎“Members of the public are advised to seek assistance from bank officials or security personnel when facing challenges at ATMs,” she said.
