The Zimbabwe Chess Federation (ZCF) is set to host a landmark event this weekend, blending the celebration of international womanhood with the royal game.
In partnership with the FIDE Commission for Women’s Chess, the federation will stage the Ladies Open Blitz Chess Tournament on Saturday, 14 March 2026, at the Dominican Convent High School in Harare.
The tournament, organized to mark Chess Women’s Day 2026, promises to be a historic gathering for female chess players in the nation, highlighted by the presence of a distinguished international figure.
In a significant boost for the local chess community, the event will feature Women Grandmaster Dana Reizniece-Ozola, the Deputy Chair of the FIDE Management Board. Beyond her administrative role in the World Chess Federation, Reizniece-Ozola is a decorated player and a former Minister of Economics of Latvia.
During the event, she will deliver an inspirational talk to the participants, sharing her journey and insights on breaking barriers in the sport.
The tournament is designed to be inclusive and accessible. Organizers have confirmed that entry is free for all female players, encouraging broad participation from across the country. The blitz format will provide a fast-paced and thrilling competitive environment.
Beyond the main competition, the day’s highlights will include simultaneous exhibition games featuring some of Zimbabwe’s top female players, offering amateurs a rare chance to test their skills against elite competition.
The event underscores the Zimbabwe Chess Federation’s commitment to fostering female talent. By creating a platform for high-level competition and providing exposure to international role models, the ZCF aims to inspire a new generation of female chess players.
