BULAWAYO – The Bulawayo Police are appealing for calm and vigilance following a weekend marked by tragedy, which includes a fatal head-on collision and two separate sudden death cases in the city’s suburbs.
In a statement released on Monday, police spokesperson Inspector Nomalanga Msebele confirmed the incidents, which occurred between the 28th of February and the 1st of March 2026.
Fatal Collision on Airport Road
In the first incident, a 48-year-old man died at the scene of a horrific crash on Saturday morning.
The accident occurred at around 0600 hours along Airport Road near Northend.
The now-deceased, identified as Obedia Nyika of Romney Park, Bulawayo, was driving a Toyota Passo northbound with no passengers.
According to police, Mr. Nyika encroached into the oncoming lane, leading to a head-on collision with an Iveco Euro cargo truck traveling south. The truck was driven by a 50-year-old man from Nkulumane 11.
“Due to the accident, the now-deceased sustained head injuries and died on the spot,” said Inspector Msebele.
His body was conveyed to the United Bulawayo Hospital (UBH) mortuary, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination.
Following the tragedy, police have reiterated the importance of road safety.
“We urge all motorists to always exercise extreme caution and keep a proper lookout when driving to avoid the loss of lives,” Inspector Msebele added.
Two Sudden Deaths Under Investigation
In a separate update, police are investigating two sudden death cases that occurred in the suburbs of Khami and New Lobengula.
The first case involves 19-year-old Tariro Leeroy Mukombachoto of Khami. The young man retired to bed on the night of the 28th of February. At around 0200 hours the next morning, his aunt was awakened by noise as he suffered an epileptic attack. He appeared to recover and continued sleeping. However, tragedy struck hours later.
“At around 0700 hours, she woke up and tried to wake the now-deceased but there was no response and discovered that he was not showing any signs of life,” Inspector Msebele reported.
A police report was subsequently filed.
In light of this, authorities are urging families to be vigilant.
“We encourage members of the public to seek medical support and ensure that those who are sick receive appropriate care and supervision where necessary,” she said.
In a second, deeply distressing case, a 36-year-old man from New Lobengula was found dead on Sunday morning in an apparent suicide.
The now-deceased, Cabangani Moyo, left his home on the 28th of February at around 1300 hours without telling anyone where he was going and never returned. His body was discovered the following day.
“On the 1st of March 2026 at around 1030 hours, his friend… heard people saying there was a male adult who committed suicide by hanging on a big tree near a certain football pitch,” Inspector Msebele explained.
The friend proceeded to the location and found Mr. Moyo hanging from a tree branch with no signs of life. His body has also been taken to UBH for a post-mortem.
This tragic event has prompted a heartfelt plea from the police regarding mental health.
“We urge the public to always speak out to parents, pastors, community leaders, counsellors or close friends whenever they feel overwhelmed emotionally, as taking their own lives isn’t a solution,” Inspector Msebele said.
