BULAWAYO – A wave of sorrow has swept through the Douglasdale suburb following the tragic death of a two-year-old girl who was attacked by four Boerboel dogs on Saturday morning.

The Bulawayo Police has confirmed a sudden death case involving the toddler, identified as Tanaka Dube. The incident occurred at around 1000 hours on the 28th of February 2026.

According to a statement released by the police, the young girl was walking with her 31-year-old mother near their home. At the same time, her 44-year-old stepfather was inside the property’s fence feeding the four large dogs.

In a horrifying turn of events, the dogs managed to jump over the fence and ran directly towards the child, launching a vicious attack.

Tanaka sustained severe injuries during the assault, including lacerations to the scalp, behind the ears, in the armpits, and on both legs.

She was rushed to Mpilo Hospital for emergency medical attention.

Despite the efforts of medical staff, she was admitted and treated but tragically succumbed to her injuries.

In a statement, police spokesperson Inspector Nomalanga Msebele extended the force’s sympathies to the bereaved family.

“We would like to express our deepest condolences to the family in this heartbreaking loss, and our thoughts are with them during this difficult time,” Inspector Msebele said.

The incident has cast a spotlight on the responsibilities of pet ownership. Authorities are using this tragedy as a stark reminder for dog owners to take necessary precautions.

“We would also like to appeal to all dog owners, especially those with large or aggressive breeds, to ensure their properties are properly secured to prevent dogs from jumping over or escaping,” Inspector Msebele added.

The police investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident is currently underway.
