BULAWAYO–Government has started building houses for civil servants, aiming to give workers a better life as the country pushes towards its Vision 2030 goals.

The Minister of Public Service and Social Welfare, Honourable Edgar Moyo, toured the project at Rangemore Housing Site to check on progress. He explained that having a home is about more than just having a roof over your head.

“Our dream as a nation is Vision 2030, to become a prosperous and powerful society. Housing is a key part of that,” said Minister Moyo.

“When people have a home, they feel dignity and comfort. It helps us reach our goal of becoming an upper middle income society”, he added.

The government is working to fix the housing shortage in the country. The project is part of the government’s plans, known as NDS1 and NDS2 which focus on solving problems like housing.

The houses are being built mainly for civil servants the teachers, nurses, and other government workers who serve the public.

Jabulani Sibanda, Zanu PF provisional chairperson who was part of the tour, spoke about the bigger meaning of the project.

He said it follows the President’s idea that independence should mean taking care of people throughout their whole lives.

“From the moment you are born to the end of your life, you need things like a place to stay and an education,” said Hon Jabulani Sibanda.

“This project shows we are moving forward and doing things ourselves. It is also great to see that the companies building these houses are owned by young people, not older contractors”, he added.

The Chief Executive officer of NSSA, Doctor Charles Shava gave more details about the budget and the first stage of the building work.

He said the total cost for the whole housing plan is about $99.3 million. The first part of the program, which is the most important right now, has a budget of $11.2 million.

“The first phase will give us 534 housing units, these will be given to civil servants first”, Doctor Shava explained.

The project is seen as a major step towards improving the lives of workers and their families, while also creating jobs for young local builders.
