Zim GBC News | South African Correspondent

A South African man has appeared in court charged with the murder of a Zimbabwean truck driver whose body was discovered with a single gunshot wound to the head near Beitbridge earlier this month.

Johana Mabasa faces murder charges in connection with the death of Dave Mukanganwi, a truck driver found fatally wounded in the early hours of 19 February 2026.

The accused appeared under armed guard before Provincial Magistrate Gillian Padzakashamba at a special court sitting held at Beitbridge District Hospital on 24 February, where he is currently receiving medical treatment for injuries sustained during the incident.

What Happened On That Fateful Night

The court heard disturbing details about the circumstances surrounding the killing.

According to prosecutor Sichelesile Sibanda, Mabasa allegedly boarded Mukanganwi’s truck at Beitbridge at approximately 2 am on 19 February, claiming he needed assistance to rescue another driver stranded at Rutenga.

“At around 2am on 19 February, Mabasa allegedly boarded Mukanganwi’s truck at Beitbridge, claiming he needed assistance to rescue another driver at Rutenga,” the prosecution told the court.

What followed was a violent confrontation inside the truck cabin. The State alleges that Mukanganwi was shot once during the altercation. The bullet reportedly entered below the ear and exited through the mouth, causing severe facial injuries. Investigators noted two bullet holes on the upper left side of the cabin, suggesting the firearm was discharged from inside the vehicle.

Digital Evidence And Arrest

The prosecution presented compelling digital evidence linking Mabasa to the killing. WhatsApp messages recovered from the accused’s cellphone allegedly show he informed an unidentified person about the crime.

“WhatsApp messages recovered from the accused’s cellphone allegedly show he informed an unidentified person that he had fought with and killed someone,” the court heard.

Following the shooting, Mabasa sought help from a man identified as Jefter Nyanga. The accused reportedly claimed he had been injured and required hospital treatment. Nyanga subsequently alerted police, leading to Mabasa’s arrest.

Immigration Charges

In addition to the murder charge, Mabasa faces a separate count of contravening immigration laws. The prosecution alleges he entered Zimbabwe without proper travel documents.

Mabasa was not asked to plead and was advised to approach the High Court should he wish to apply for bail. He indicated his intention to seek legal representation.

The accused was remanded in custody until 9 March 2026 as investigations continue.

The killing has sent shockwaves through the trucking community, with colleagues describing Mukanganwi as a dedicated and hardworking driver.

Cross-border truck drivers operate in a high-risk environment, often falling victim to criminal elements along major regional routes.
