Six armed robbers have been sentenced to a combined 46 years and six months in prison after being convicted of a string of violent crimes in Bulawayo, police have said.

Detective Chief Inspector Herbert Kanyinji, Officer in Charge of CID Homicide Bulawayo, said the group had been responsible for a spate of armed robberies which happened in the greater part of Bulawayo whereby they targeted local business people who stored large sums of cash in business premises and residential areas

He said the syndicate carried out surveillance before striking.

“After carrying out a thorough surveillance the team will then hit the targeted houses and business premises,” he said.

“During the process they used a unique modus operandi where they will lace boiled sausages, throw them into the yard where there are guard dogs present and then after eliminating the security in the premises they then go in and target the complainants.”

Kanyinji added that the suspects would rob and even go up to the extent of torturing to extract as much information and large sums of money.

The convicted suspects were identified as Silence Kangwa (30), Julius Mgwagwa (28), Ediza Mudodo (36), Douglas Rizine (32), and Felias Mvula (54). Police said the men were part of a coordinated syndicate that operated across several suburbs in the city.

He said following an outcry from residents, CID Homicide launched a targeted operation.

“During our said operation we managed to get a tip-off which led to the arrest of two of the suspects who then mentioned other remaining suspects who we eventually arrested,” he said.

The six were taken to court and, after what he described as a lengthy trial in which evidence and recoveries were presented, were convicted on 28 January 2026.

“Through the overwhelming evidence that we had and recoveries that were made, we managed to secure a conviction of 46 years and six months,” he said, adding that properties believed to be proceeds of crime, as well as a vehicle used during the offences, were seized.,
