The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) is investigating a series of tragic incidents in Masvingo Province, including the murder of two children, the death of a four-year-old learner, and a drowning accident that claimed two lives at Tugwi-Mukosi Dam.
In a statement, police confirmed the arrest of Obedience Makonye (29) in connection with the murder of his niece, Elizabeth Munetsi (14), and his cousin, Shepherd Makonye (9). The incident occurred on 26 January 2026 at Gondora Mountain in Guyo B Village, Zaka.
The victims were reportedly on their way home from school when the suspect allegedly lured them to the mountain. Police say the suspect was arrested a day later after making a confession, which led to the recovery of the victims’ bodies and a knife believed to have been used in the crime.
Meanwhile, police in Chiredzi are probing the murder of a four-year-old ECD learner, Steadfast Makondo, who was found dead under a marula tree in Newtown on 27 January 2026 after being reported missing while returning from school. Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the child’s death are ongoing.
In a separate incident, police in Ngundu are investigating a drowning accident at Tugwi-Mukosi Dam, where Leona Zendekanyi (26) and Saint Munyaradzi (3) died after a boat carrying nine passengers capsized on 28 January 2026. Preliminary investigations suggest the boat struck a hard object in the water before overturning.
Following the incidents, ZRP spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi urged parents and guardians to prioritise the safety of children, particularly primary and ECD learners, by accompanying them to and from school or arranging safe and reliable transport.
He also warned the public against unsafe water activities, stressing the need to avoid overloading boats, use proper safety equipment and exercise caution when travelling on water bodies.
Police investigations into all the incidents are continuing.
