The Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) has arrested Harare Deputy Mayor Rosemary Muronda and former Harare South legislator Shadreck Mashayamombe on separate corruption charges. The arrests clarify earlier reports which had incorrectly suggested that Harare Mayor, Councillor Jacob Mafume, had also been taken into custody.
ZACC Commissioner Kindness Paradza confirmed to Zim GBC News that Mayor Mafume was not arrested but was invited for questioning as part of the ongoing investigations.
“We arrested Mashayamombe but as for the Mayor, we invited him for questioning. This means the mayor at this stage is not under arrest. Having said that, investigations are currently in progress,” said Commissioner Paradza.
“Deputy Mayor Rosemary Muronda and Shadreck Mashayamombe are the two we arrested. As I said the mayor was called in for questioning and was allowed to go home. He was not arrested.”
According to ZACC, Mashayamombe is facing fraud charges, while Deputy Mayor Muronda has been charged with criminal abuse of office. The Commission also revealed that two other senior Harare City Council officials are being sought.
“Two other senior council officials are still at large but the net is closing in,” added Paradza.
ZACC has stated that further updates will be provided as the high-profile investigation unfolds.
