South Africa’s Border Management Authority (BMA) has intercepted 25 Zimbabwean nationals attempting to cross illegally into the country through dense bushveld near the Beitbridge border post.
The interception occurred on Monday, January 5, 2026, as part of intensified security operations during the peak post-festive travel period. Authorities utilized advanced drone surveillance to detect the group attempting to bypass the official port of entry.
The operation was led by BMA Commissioner and Beitbridge Port Commander Ntakuseni Lambani, who coordinated tactical ground patrols in vulnerable border sections. The BMA announced the interception in a social media post, stating,
“Today, 05 January 2026, The Commissioner… Led by Beitbridge Port of Entry Port Commander Ntakuseni Lambani are on the ground in the bushes. With the assistance of the technology deployed, 25 illegal migrants [were intercepted] trying to get into South Africa illegally through the bushes.”
Officials confirmed that aerial surveillance technology has become a critical tool in monitoring high-risk areas known for unlawful crossings.
The interception is part of a broader crackdown on irregular migration, aimed at securing the border and ensuring all travelers use lawful entry points.
The BMA warned that heightened patrols and drone surveillance will continue, and individuals attempting illegal crossings face arrest and prosecution.
