A 56-year-old Gweru nurse has died in an apparent suicide by shooting, following allegations that he sexually abused a minor relative, police have confirmed.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) is investigating the death of Registered General Nurse Farai Zindonda, whose body was discovered at his Woodlands Suburb home on December 29.
Midlands Provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko, said,
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms investigating a case of sudden death, suspected suicide by shooting. A 56-year-old man was found dead, his body lying in a pool of blood.”
Inspector Mahoko stated that a .303 rifle loaded with nine rounds was found in the deceased’s hands, pointed at his head, which had a gunshot wound.
“Investigations are underway to establish the full circumstances leading to the death,” he added.
While police did not comment on the motive, a close relative, speaking on condition of anonymity, linked the tragedy to pending allegations. The source claimed Zindonda had sexually abused a 10-year-old relative and took his own life after family members threatened to report him to the police.
Inspector Mahoko urged the public to seek help during crises.
“They should learn to share with third parties or respected people who can help with counseling,” he said.
The incident has shocked the local community, highlighting the severe repercussions of abuse allegations and the critical need for accessible mental health support.
