HARARE – Acting President Constantino Chiwenga has issued a stark challenge to the ruling party elite, urging a return to the principles of the liberation struggle and questioning whom the nation’s leaders truly serve.
His remarks, delivered at the Heroes Acre burial of retired Brigadier-General Mathias Tizirai Ngarava, have intensified the simmering succession debate within ZANU PF.
With President Emmerson Mnangagwa on annual leave, Chiwenga used the platform to call for “ethical leadership” and “clean governance,” condemning systems that allow vast wealth accumulation by a few amid widespread poverty.
“The liberation struggle was never fought to enrich individuals through corruption, nepotism, or tribal favoritism,” Chiwenga stated.
“We must all reflect and ask ourselves: who are we really serving? The legacy we leave will be defined by a choice between patriotic service and national purpose, or one of plunder and self-enrichment.”
The speech, widely interpreted as a veiled critique of the current political order, has ignited vigorous discussion across the nation’s political landscape.
Informal Reactions Highlight Public Cynicism
Following the speech, reactions in informal circles reflected a deep-seated public skepticism. One commentator dismissed the remarks, saying in Shona,
“Anongowawata uyo” (He’s just making noise), suggesting a disbelief in tangible action.
Another pointed to perceived contradictions within the system, noting,
“Hahaha zvigananda zvaenda nenyika munhu ane 1million yekuba or raptor ne 159k unomudza kuti Ed akayipa agokuterera” (It’s chaos, the country is gone. Someone who stole a million or a Raptor for 159k, you then tell him Ed is wrong, will he listen?).
Further commentary suggested the message was intended for specific factions.
“Even akasateererwa but we can never say pawawatwa although the vaitaurirwa vacho zviri zvituta,” one observer noted, implying that while the targeted elites may not heed the warning, the critique was direct.
Some analysts, referencing past political events, concluded the internal dynamics remain complex. “Kana iyezvi mukadzi ndiye amudzikamisa,” an observer remarked, suggesting that Chiwenga’s wife is the one behind his silence.
Political analysts posit that Chiwenga’s forceful appeal underscores the high-stakes battle for ZANU PF’s future direction and leadership, framing the 2027 succession question as a clash between purported revolutionary ideals and present-day governance challenges.
