As awareness on HIV prevention grows, health experts continue to emphasize the importance of using Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) as a highly effective method in reducing the risk of HIV infection.

However, they warn that while PrEP can protect against HIV, it does not guard against other sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

PrEP, a daily pill taken by HIV-negative individuals, has been proven to reduce the risk of contracting HIV by over 90% when taken consistently. It is especially recommended for individuals at higher risk, including those with HIV-positive partners or who engage in unprotected sex with multiple partners.

“PrEP is a game-changer in the fight against HIV,” said a local professional from GALZ . “But it’s important for the public to understand that it doesn’t prevent other STIs such as gonorrhea, syphilis, or chlamydia.”

To ensure comprehensive sexual health protection, experts advise using condoms alongside PrEP. Condoms remain the most reliable barrier method to prevent the spread of various STIs and unintended pregnancies.

“Combining PrEP with condoms offers the highest level of protection,” the expert added. “It’s about being informed and making responsible choices.”

As the fight against HIV continues, health authorities are urging communities to educate themselves on all available prevention options — and to use them together for safer, healthier lives.
