Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, the actor famous for his role as the sorcerer Shang Tsung in the “Mortal Kombat” movie and games, has died. He was 75 years old.
His spokesperson confirmed that Tagawa died on Thursday, December 4, in Santa Barbara, California. The cause was complications from a stroke.
Tagawa was born in Tokyo but moved to the United States as a child. He became a legendary figure in action and science fiction films.
While he played many roles, fans will remember him best for his chilling performance as Shang Tsung in the 1995 live-action “Mortal Kombat” film. He later voiced and portrayed the character in video games and other projects.
His career in Hollywood spanned decades. He appeared in major films like “Pearl Harbor,” “Planet of the Apes,” “47 Ronin,” and the Oscar-winning “The Last Emperor.” His final major role was as Trade Minister Tagomi in the Amazon series “The Man in the High Castle.”
Tagawa was not just an actor; he was also a highly trained martial artist. He studied karate in Japan and even created his own style, which he used in his film roles. This skill made his action scenes, especially in movies like “Rising Sun” and “Showdown in Little Tokyo,” particularly powerful.
After a long career, Tagawa moved to Hawaii with his wife, Sally. He is survived by Sally, their three children, and two grandchildren.
Fans and fellow actors are sharing memories online, thanking him for his iconic performances and wishing his family peace.
