DStv Launches Free Festive Upgrades in Bold Push to Win Back Viewers

In a strategic move to re-energise its subscriber base and reclaim lost market share, pay-TV giant DStv has launched a major festive season promotion titled “Thol-iUpsize”, offering free automatic upgrades to higher-tier packages for active decoder subscribers.

The campaign, which runs from 10 November to 31 December 2025, allows customers to enjoy premium content at no additional cost a timely boost for households gearing up for the holiday season.

Under the initiative, Compact Plus and Compact subscribers will gain access to Premium channels, while Family and Access customers will be elevated to the Compact bouquet. The promotion requires no manual activation, as upgrades are automatically applied across the platform.

This approach, DStv says, is designed to enhance viewer engagement, improve satisfaction, and address subscriber attrition, particularly among middle-income customers who have increasingly migrated to streaming alternatives.

Byron du Plessis, CEO of Pay TV South Africa at MultiChoice, described the promotion as part of a wider transformation within the DStv ecosystem.

“Our Upsize campaign is part of a broader value reset at DStv. We’re committed to making DStv more accessible and rewarding, with affordability and customer experience at the core of our strategy,”

The initiative comes amid mounting challenges for MultiChoice, which has grappled with declining subscription numbers over the past few years, especially in its high-end segment. The company’s turnaround plan driven by new CEO David Mignot and parent firm Canal+ focuses on reversing that trend through affordability, digital convenience, and content-led incentives.

Among the key pillars of this plan are decoder price cuts, now starting at just R299, and a revamped DStv Rewards programme aimed at giving loyal viewers tangible benefits. A newly launched online store, scheduled to debut later this month, will also feature free delivery and simplified ordering to make hardware purchases and upgrades easier for customers.

The Thol-iUpsize campaign dovetails with a vibrant festive content lineup, promising a mix of blockbuster entertainment and premium sports coverage. Sports fans will have front-row access to the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025, kicking off on 21 December, and the Betway SA20 cricket tournament, which begins on 26 December. For entertainment enthusiasts, new local productions such as Mpondoland on Mzansi Magic and Kokkedoor: Son en See on KykNet headline a packed programming schedule across multiple genres.

Industry analysts view the festive offer as a tactical attempt by DStv to stem the tide of cord-cutting and reassert its dominance in an increasingly fragmented entertainment market. Over the past few years, streaming services such as Netflix, Showmax, and Disney+ have gained traction among South African audiences seeking flexible, on-demand content. However, DStv continues to leverage its strong sports rights portfolio and local content partnerships as key differentiators.

According to company insiders, the Thol-iUpsize campaign also serves as a soft rebranding moment—emphasising DStv’s responsiveness to consumer needs at a time when economic pressures have forced many households to downgrade or cancel subscriptions. By temporarily lifting content barriers, the pay-TV operator hopes to remind viewers of the value contained within its higher-tier offerings.

Du Plessis said the company is determined to prove that DStv remains a central player in African home entertainment.

“Free upgrades, lower hardware costs, and major sports coverage show we’re listening to customers and delivering real value,”

While the promotion officially ends on 31 December 2025, standard billing will resume in January 2026, marking a return to regular package pricing. Whether the festive generosity translates into improved customer retention and financial performance will become clearer in the company’s next fiscal update.

For now, DStv is betting that the combination of free upgrades, affordable access, and compelling holiday programming will reignite viewer loyalty and position the platform as the go-to entertainment destination this festive season.
