By Tembani P. Thebe | ZIM GBC NEWS

Zimbabwe has made history by installing Africa’s first “smart bench” powered by artificial intelligence, named the “Pal Smart Bench,” this new piece of public infrastructure is designed to do much more than provide a place to rest, it aims to revolutionize how people access information and learn in community spaces.

The Pal Smart Bench acts as a central hub for the community. It offers real-time updates on local news and events and provides direct access to educational materials, seamlessly blending technology into daily life.

“This bench is a crucial move toward modernizing our public areas,” said one of the project developers.

“Our goal is to make information available to everyone, which helps promote a more connected and informed community.”

A key feature of the bench is its free Wi-Fi and links to online learning platforms, making it a powerful tool for students and professionals.

“Putting internet access and educational resources in public areas helps close the digital divide,” noted a community leader on the project.

“We think learning opportunities should be available to all, no matter their background.”

Built using eco-friendly materials, the bench supports sustainability while improving the look and feel of urban settings. It’s intended to be a natural gathering spot that encourages people to interact.

“We see this bench as a community living room, not just street furniture. It’s a place where people can meet, share ideas, and learn from one another,” said one of the project’s architects.

As the first installation of its kind in Africa, the Pal Smart Bench could inspire similar projects across the continent. By combining cutting-edge technology, environmental responsibility and a strong community focus, it presents a new vision for public infrastructure.

With this initiative, Zimbabwe is leading by example, showing how technology can make urban living more connected and enriching. The world is now watching to see the impact this smart bench will have on the future of public spaces in Africa and beyond.
