CHINGOLA, Zambia – A visit by Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema to Chingola District descended into chaos on Saturday afternoon after an irate mob turned riotous, resulting in a police vehicle being overturned and set on fire.

The incident occurred on November 08, 2025, at approximately 2:50 PM, originating at the Chiwempala Market where the President was addressing residents.

According to a statement from the Zambia Police Service, the situation escalated when unruly individuals began breaking into and looting shops while the President was still speaking. As police moved in to contain the looting, the crowd became violent and charged towards the presidential venue.

“For security reasons, the President was safely whisked away and escorted to the landing pad at Chikola Secondary School grounds,” said Police Public Relations Officer, Rae Hamoonga.

However, the violent mob followed the motorcade, throwing stones at vehicles. A white Toyota Land Cruiser belonging to the police, registration number ZP 2537 B, was aggressively attacked. Its windscreen was shattered, the vehicle was overturned, and it was subsequently set ablaze. The police officer driving the vehicle discharged ten rounds of ammunition into the air in a failed attempt to disperse the crowd.

The destruction extended beyond the police vehicle. The mob also burned a Presidential Holding Tent, a portable toilet, and damaged a private vehicle belonging to a contractor. The total value of the destroyed property is yet to be determined.

Police have since apprehended two suspects in connection with the violence: Abraham Chilumbu, 24, and Abraham Sichone, 21. Both are in custody and are expected to appear in court soon.

Authorities have restored calm in the area and intensified patrols. The police service issued a stern warning to the public against acts of violence and destruction of property.

“The Zambia Police Service sternly warns members of the public against engaging in acts of violence, vandalism, or destruction of property… Such behavior is criminal and will be met with the full force of the law,” Hamoonga stated.

“Citizens are further reminded that maintaining peace and order is a collective responsibility.”
