Bulawayo – A 44-year-old Tanzanian man, Sleiman Amour, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison by the Bulawayo High Court after he was convicted of unlawful possession of methamphetamine, a dangerous and highly addictive drug.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ), the arrest occurred on 23 October 2025 when police officers at a roadblock along the Bulawayo–Plumtree Road stopped a South African registered Man Truck heading towards Plumtree.

“The truck driver failed to produce a valid temporary import permit, prompting a search”.

During the inspection, police officers became suspicious of lunchboxes which were wrapped in foil hidden among bags of beans. Amour, who was a passenger, bizarrely opened one of the lunchboxes and started eating spaghetti in an attempt to appear innocent.

In the statement it further states that thorough search took place which revealed a hidden compartment in the truck’s roof, concealing more lunchboxes packed with methamphetamine.

The driver and another passenger fled the scene, but Amour was immediately arrested. The truck was seized and has since been forfeited to the State as part of the investigation.

Authorities have warned that Zimbabwe is taking a tough stance against drug trafficking.

“Drug abuse and trafficking are destroying lives and communities across the country, the law is watching and punishment will be severe,”said the authority.

As this case unfolds,

  • It underscores the growing threat of international drug smuggling operations using Zimbabwe as a transit route.
  • It reveals that drug trafficking is not just a legal issue, but a community crisis that affects lives, health, and safety.
  • It is a warning to the public and potential traffickers that drug crimes carry heavy consequence.
