BULAWAYO – In a dramatic development that reveals deepening political intrigue, Gifford Sibanda has resigned from the pressure group Ibhetshu Likazulu, accusing its leadership of participating in a deceptive legal maneuver designed to justify President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s anticipated term extension in 2030.
The resignation follows investigative reports that exposed a planned Constitutional Court application, purportedly intended to challenge the term extension, but which sources allege is actually a strategic move to secure a judicial ruling that would legitimize it.
In his resignation letter addressed to the organization’s Secretary General, Mbuso Fuzwayo, Sibanda stated his departure was prompted by a fundamental disagreement with the group’s new direction.
“It is with a heavy heart that I tender my resignation from Ibhetshu LikaZulu, effective immediately,” Sibanda wrote.
“This decision comes after deep reflection on the current direction and approach the organisation has taken… Unfortunately, I find that this route diverges from my own beliefs, principles, and the foundational values that Ibhetshu LikaZulu has long stood for.”
The controversy centers on a court application that Ibhetshu Likazulu, under Fuzwayo’s leadership, has signed onto. While framed publicly as a challenge to the constitutionality of extending a presidential term, investigations suggest the case is a “friendly lawsuit” meant to fail, thereby producing a favorable ruling for the government.
This revelation creates a significant contradiction. When initially contacted about the scheme two days ago, Fuzwayo reportedly claimed he was being deceived and had no knowledge of it. However, the emergence of signed court papers confirms his active participation, indicating he was not truthful about his involvement.
Sibanda’s letter praised the organization’s historic role, calling it “a home of conscience and courage,” but made clear that its current path was untenable for him. He concluded by affirming his continued commitment to the struggle for justice, stating he would contribute “in my own capacity, to the vision of a just and democratic Zimbabwe.”
This resignation throws a spotlight on the complex and often hidden strategies being employed around the contentious “2030 Agenda,” suggesting that the battle over Presidential term limits is being fought not only in the political arena but also through calculated legal theatrics.
