Bulawayo – A crucial national press conference addressing Zimbabwe’s constitutional crisis has been abruptly postponed after police presence was noted at a venue in Bulawayo, this follow s early morning arson attacks on two locations associated with critics of President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s proposed term extension.
The conference, titled; “Constitutional Crossroads: Citizens Respond to Zimbabwe’s Constitutional Crisis,” was scheduled for Tuesday, 28 October 2025 at 11 AM at Bulawayo Club in the CBD.
It has now been postponed indefinitely amid what observers are calling a coordinated campaign of intimidation.
The postponement comes after two separate firebombing incidents within hours of each other targeting prominent figures opposed to the president’s 2030 agenda.
According to sources, the SAPES Trust premises in Belgravia, Harare was firebombed just after midnight by unidentified men who abducted the night guard and secured the premises with new locks. The venue was meant to host the press conference featuring prominent opposition figures including Job Sikhala and Tendai Biti.
“In a brazen move, the attackers abducted the night guard and locked the gate with new keys to prevent access,” a security source familiar with the incident told Zim GBC News.
Shortly thereafter, at approximately 1:30 AM, the Highfield residence of Gilbert Bgwende, a member of the Constitutional Defence Forum, was set ablaze by unidentified assailants. Bgwende has been vocal in his opposition to Constitutional changes that would extend Presidential term limits.
Political analyst Hopewell Chin’ono, who first reported on both incidents, stated that “both attacks, occurring in the early hours of the morning, point to a coordinated campaign of intimidation against voices resisting the 2030 agenda.”
The scheduled Bulawayo press conference was to feature a broad coalition of voices including:
· Job Sikhala
· Tendai Biti
· Jameson Timba
· Jacob Ngarivhume
· Munyaradzi Gwisai
· Obert Masaraure
· Emmanuel Sitima
· Moline Bandi
· War Veterans Representative
· Church Representative
The incidents have sent shockwaves through civil society and political circles, with many expressing concerns about the shrinking space for political dissent in Zimbabwe.
As of press time, police authorities had not issued an official statement regarding the attacks or the postponed conference.
