Southern African Leaders Pay Tribute to Late Kenyan PM Raila Odinga

HARARE/WINDHOEK – Southern African leaders have joined the global community in mourning the passing of Kenyan political icon and former Prime Minister, the Right Honourable Raila Amolo Odinga.

In Harare, Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa visited the Kenyan Embassy on Wednesday to sign the official condolence book, honouring the legacy of the veteran opposition leader.

The tribute was echoed in Namibia, where President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah paid her respects at the Kenyan High Commission in Windhoek.

Reflecting on the deep historical ties between Namibia and Kenya, President Nandi-Ndaitwah stated,

“Namibia and Kenya have a long relationship, and the late Raila Odinga played his part in this relationship.”

She highlighted Kenya’s crucial role during Namibia’s liberation struggle and its continued solidarity after independence.

“Kenya’s support was instrumental in helping Namibia establish its post-independence governance structures. The passing of Raila Odinga is a great loss to Kenya and the people of Namibia,” the President added.

Raila Odinga, a towering figure in Kenyan politics for decades, passed away on October 15, 2025 following a brief illness.

The news of his death has sent waves of grief across Kenya and the African continent, where he was widely respected as a champion of democracy and Pan-Africanism.

The former Prime Minister was laid to rest at his rural home in Bondi Siaya County with full a state funeral honours, befitting his status as a national leader.

Crowds flooded Nyayo National Stadium nearby rroads to pay their last respects, they even tried to breach parliament, where the government had originally scheduled the public viewing.

Though mainly known as an opposition figure, Odinga became prime minister in 2008 and also struck a political pact with Ruto last year in a career marked by shifting alliances.

The outpouring of condolences from across Africa underscores the significant impact and influence Odinga held beyond Kenya’s borders.
